Linux R5 coming

TechWeb is reporting that Lotus will officially unveil a Linux version of R5 at Lotusphere in Berlin. The article also says that the software will be available next month.

VSI will debut the worldwide roll-out of its Lotus Notes fax solution for the enterprise, VSI-FAX for Notes 3.0.1 for Lotus Notes Release 5 (R5) at Lotusphere Europe ’99.

Equant plans Notes/Domino service

Equant announced plans to launch a fully managed and integrated business service for Lotus Notes and Domino. Scheduled for deployment in early 2000, Equant’s service includes a set of design, implementation and management services, together with network infrastructure and global 24×7 support.

Lotusphere Web cast

In partnership with Lotus, webcasts.com will produce Web casts of the Lotusphere Europe 99 conference and trade show this month in Berlin (October 25-29) and again during Lotusphere 2000 in Orlando (January 16-20). The Web casts will be accessible from the Lotusphere Web site.

WeTalk does community right

The WeTalk Network’s site is now up and running. Although the company is still in it’s nascent stage, it’s being founded by Dan Shafer, and old friend and brilliant visionary. Dan’s was part of both Salon and CNET, and a dinner conversation with him a few years ago contributed strongly to our to our incredibly popular PowerBoards. WeTalk’s premise is "We do community right". WeTalk’s core technology "focuses on facilitating the creation and management of online communities characterized by moderation of content, incentives for high-quality participation, personalization of the user experience, and compelling supporting applications." It’s still too early to tell you much more, but if you’re interested in how communities should work on the Internet, you should definitely keep an eye on The WeTalk Network. — DG

Melissa update

Our buddy Steve Amontis sent in this important link about updates to the Melissa virus. We believe (but haven’t confirmed) that this will extend beyond the Outlook-using audience, because, if you launch the Word file as discussed (and you can do that from any email client), Word’s macros will take over. Keep vigilant.

Palm Computing takes on enterprise

CNN Interactive has this article on Palm Computing’s new Palm Ethernet cradle and HotSync Server. According to the article, the Palm HotSync Server, will be a pack of Palm and third-party conduits that handle the data exchange between Palm applications and a server-based enterprise resource planning suite or groupware application.

Windows 2000 speculation

This article from TechWeb speculates when Windows 2000 will be released. According to some industry analysts quoted in the article, look for an announcement at Comdex ’99, or it may launch in February, when a Windows 2000 trade fair is planned in California.

Notes plug-in

This article from InfoWorld says that Microsoft CEO Bill Gates has been trying to convince Lotus CEO Jeff Papows that it’s time for Lotus to make the Notes client a plug-in for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

Cybernet Software Systems announced the immediate availability of IntelliPRINTCAL, a new calendar printing product that prints and previews Notes calendars in Franklin and Day-Timer formats. IntelliPRINTCAL is R5 ready and Y2K compliant. It runs on R4.1 thru R5.0 Notes Clients. A developer’s copy is a fully functional copy of IntelliPrint that doesn’t time out. When the application gets deployed to others for production use, then individual user licenses need to be purchased.
