BitRock announced the release of MAMPStack 5.5, an easy to install distribution of Apache, PostgreSQL, PHP, Python, and supporting libraries for Mac OS X. Its user-friendly installer, developed with BitRock’s InstallBuilder tool, allows users to quickly install and configure MAMPStack on Mac OS X. MAMPStack is licensed under the terms of the Apache License 2.0, and is free for download and use from Bitrock. It allows users to take advantage of the stability, low cost and high performance of the AMP web development platform (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Python) without the hassle of integrating, configuring, and supporting their own build. MAMPStack 5.5 provides an integrated package that can be used by both commercial and open source projects for rapid, consistent deployments in both development and production environments.

California’s attorney general has launched an inquiry into methods used by Hewlett-Packard to investigate boardroom leaks dating back to 2005, the computer maker said on Wednesday. HP said it would cooperate fully with the informal inquiry, which follows allegation by a board member, Thomas Perkins, that the company improperly recorded phone calls and emails. Perkins resigned from the board in protest.

Hewlett-Packard is putting the latest Itanium 2 processor into its line of Integrity systems and later this year will expand the capabilities of the virtualization software that runs on the servers. The Palo Alto company is refreshing its high-end server line with Intel’s Itanium 2 9000 series and adding two new entry-level servers–the four-socket rx6600 and two-socket rx3600–to the Integrity line. Both of the new servers can be ordered immediately.

PowerFile, which makes optical drive archive appliances for digital storage, introduced its Active Archive Appliance, which uses an "active" mode method for keeping frequently accessed data such as documents, images and media files always accessible on the network. The approach, designed for both small and midsize business and enterprise users, stands in contrast to the traditional method of "banishing data off to tape where it remains an enterprise burden for years," a PowerFile spokesperson said. While identifying itself to the network as a standard network volume, the PowerFile A3 commits data to a virtualized massive array of DVD optical media.

TLCC (The Learning Continuum Company) has announced the availability of Notes Domino 7 System Administration 2, the second course in TLCC’s Notes Domino 7 Admin series. This distance learning course will empower Domino admins to better manage and administer Domino servers, databases, directories, users and mail. They will learn advanced administration topics including remote server management, controlling spam, user policies, and setting up multiple Domino Directories. This course, along with TLCC’s Notes Domino 7 System Administration 1, will prepare the student for all three exams required to become an IBM Certified System Administrator.

Mozilla released Beta 2 of its upcoming Firefox 2 browser for developer review Aug. 31, emphasizing that it is being made available for testing purposes only. The release contains a number of new features, as well as some enhancements to look and feel.

IBM has chosen Sao Paulo as the sixth global location for its specialized software and services laboratories known as "Hipods" or high-performance on-demand solutions facilities, which focus on resolving large-scale computing issues for IBM customers, including eBay and Google. IBM opened the multimillion-dollar Brazilian lab Tuesday. The lab will be linked to five existing Hipods worldwide: IBM’s central Hipod facility in its Santa Teresa lab in San Jose, and Hipod satellite operations in Beijing, Bangalore, Yamato, Japan, and Hursley, United Kingdom.
