Western Illinois University is notifying more than 180,000 people that their personal data is at risk after hackers entered its networks. The university said it mailed the last of its notifications on Monday to people whose Social Security number, credit card account number and other sensitive information were on the student service servers in the security breach.

Although widespread virus outbreaks may be a thing of the past, the total amount of malicious software being written is on the rise, says McAfee. The security vendor added the 200,000th definition to its threat database, and it expects the total number of identified threats to double in another two years. McAfee’s antivirus products use these definitions as digital fingerprints to determine which software should not be allowed to run on a user’s PC.

Large numbers of companies are taking risks with data protection, because they are not aware of the requirements of the law. Nearly half (44 percent) of companies use live data in test environments–something the 1998 Data Protection Act warns against explicitly, according to a recent survey of IT directors by Compuware. Half the directors (48 percent) were only "vaguely familiar" with the act itself, according to the research, which highlights the importance of understanding the demands and keeping track of how customer data is treated.

Lenovo Group said that it has agreed to allow IBM Global Technology Services’ arm to license its ThinkVantage software for deployment on non-Lenovo PCs. The ThinkVantage software is designed to cut IT costs by automating PC support functions such as wired and wireless connectivity settings, PC desktop migration, and data recovery after a system crash or virus infection. The deal marks the first time the software is available for systems other than ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops.

Enron founder Kenneth Lay, who was convicted of helping perpetuate one of the most sprawling business frauds in U.S. history, died Wednesday in Aspen. He was 64. Lay died of a heart attack, his pastor in Houston said. Lay was convicted May 25 along with former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling of defrauding investors and employees by repeatedly lying about Enron’s financial strength in the months before the company plummeted into bankruptcy protection in December 2001. Lay was also convicted in a separate non-jury trial of bank fraud and making false statements to banks, charges related to his personal finances.
