Members of the U.S. House of Representatives vowed Thursday not to let a bill aimed at curbing spyware die for a third time.

Laptop computers are quickly becoming standard-issue equipment for enterprise workforces across the globe, but the productivity gained from this added mobility comes at a price: increased exposure to theft, loss and damage.
Luckily, IT managers seeking to safeguard mobile data have a growing number of options at their disposal.
One such option is Seagate’s fully encrypted Momentus FDE.2. On March 12, Seagate began shipping the drive to ASI Computer Technologies to be used in notebook PCs with hardened security. ASI is a hardware component distributor catering to white-box system integrators and is using the disks in machines branded for sale under the integrators’ names.

Contrary to earlier reports that former HP Chair Patricia Dunn and her cohorts would be pleading guilty, a California state judge has thrown out the charges.
A state judge in California Wednesday dropped the charges against ex-Hewlett-Packard Chair Patricia Dunn, who was accused of wire fraud in the company’s boardroom spying scandal. Dunn originally faced four felony charges and jail time in the case.
Three other defendants–Kevin Hunsaker, Ronald DeLia and Matthew Depante–pleaded "no contest" to the wire fraud charge, a misdemeanor in California.

Douglas Plude, convicted of his wife’s murder, says computer logs provide an alibi. Plude, who lived in Wisconsin, claims his expert had insufficient time before trial to review them.
What makes this case relevant is that the family had two computers. On the night of October 21, shortly before Plude’s wife Genell died, both computers were active around 10 p.m. Genell’s computer shows the user conducted online searches for information on Fioricet–a codeine derivative. Plude’s computer shows Internet activity and use of a photo editing program between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Plude claims that parallel activity indicates that Genell was looking up information about Fioricet, buttressing the conclusion of suicide.
The trial judge ruled that waiting three years to turn over key evidence of the hard drives was reasonable. A jury convicted Plude of first-degree homicide, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. A Wisconsin appeals court has denied his request by a 2-1 vote and affirmed his conviction.
Even if the computer searches had been thoroughly explored, the majority concluded, they wouldn’t be entirely exculpatory: "Whoever performed the search on Genell’s computer only examined the first page of various results–no page with dosing information was ever displayed on the computer."

IBM announced it has taken technology originally developed to help customers shift IT processing resources during periods of peak activity–such as dealing with unpredictable surges in Internet traffic or processing increased levels of stock transactions–and merged these virtualization capabilities with its service oriented architecture offerings.
Specifically, virtualization capabilities on the IBM System p servers combined with IBM middleware for SOA will allow customers to maximize existing hardware and software resources to centralize administrative tasks, streamline business processes and improve overall system performance resulting in a more efficient organization.
IBM’s Advanced POWER Virtualization technology for an SOA allows a single server to be divided into multiple partitions which can each run different operating systems such as UNIX and Linux and multiple applications. It also allows processing resources to be instantaneously shifted from one partition to another when it is needed in times of peak demand to provide business flexibility. In addition, the optional High-Availability Cluster Multiprocessing program can provide fail-over protection in an SOA to provide continuous availability.
