A version of the increasingly popular Linux operating system Ubuntu will be developed for use on Net-enabled phones and devices.

A survey of more than 500 senior IT professionals reveals that a whopping 89 percent test their disaster recovery/failover systems only once a year or not at all, leaving their enterprises vulnerable to massive technology and business failures in the event of a disaster.

In addition, 70 percent of respondents said it would take at least four hours for their servers to recover completely from failure, including restored software, configuration and network and storage connectivity. Many handheld users have limited access to mail content that is older than 30 days from their devices. In addition, many search utilities can only search mail content that is present on the device; they cannot search mail content that is back at the office. This limitation can create difficulties for remote users who need to research content from the past to satisfy customer requests, respond to requests, or simply remind themselves about the history of the client interaction.

ReduceMail Pro Handheld Search searches mail content via a handheld user query and returns a summary of mail data. Users are able to access all mail content from a handheld device with limited storage space. As with all ReduceMail Pro products, Handheld Search is user friendly, robust, and easy on the Lotus Notes administrator.

Research In Motion announced plans to introduce a new development tool that will enable developers to work within the familiar .NET programming environment to rapidly create rich client wireless applications for BlackBerry smartphones. The BlackBerry Plug-in for Microsoft Visual Studio provides system integrators and in-house corporate developers with the ability to create BlackBerry applications that seamlessly integrate with back-end systems through .NET Web Services.

Research In Motion introduced the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System, the first integrated enterprise solution to enable the seamless convergence of a BlackBerry smartphone with an office desk phone. This integrated offering includes enhancements to the BlackBerry Device Software, BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite from Ascendent Systems and allows BlackBerry smartphone users to be securely authenticated to the enterprise telephony system.
