The Free Software Foundation is just weeks away from announcing the roadmap and process that will govern the release of the first draft of the rewritten GNU General Public License. Eben Moglen, the general counsel for the FSF and who is authoring the first rewrite of the license in some 15 years with its creator Richard Stallman, told eWEEK in an exclusive interview ahead of the OSBC East conference in Newton, Mass., next week that it would also be releasing within the next month a process document that tells people exactly what the rules are going to be for the discussion and comment submission process around GPL version 3.

Computer and Internet use is up, but so are concerns about identity theft and other online dangers. Fifty-five percent of American households had access to the Internet at home in 2003, more than triple the percentage in 1997, according to a report by the Census Bureau. Internet usage increased with education, income and the presence of school-age children at home, the report found. It was lowest among adults who have not graduated from high school.

Fewer businesses fell victim to the Zotob worm that struck corporate networks than previous attacks, but those it hit paid dearly. The August worm caused disruptions for about 13 percent of the organizations surveyed by computer security firm Cybertrust, which released the results of a 700-company study. As reported earlier, Zotob’s victims included cable news station CNN, TV network ABC, The New York Times, and DaimlerChrysler.

Connect Computing, working with Kolab and Linux enterprise solutions, announces a broad range of applications that can be used by medium to large businesses. This suite of applications can be installed on typical Linux servers and is built on top of the Enterprise level groupware server, Kolab. Kolab combines IMAP email, LDAP directory, and half a dozen other services configured to work together. These open source applications can replace Microsoft Exchange and Windows Server services. Using Enterprise Level applications means the services can be spread or replicated over multiple servers and domains if needed allowing hundreds or even thousands of users to access the system.

IBM chip designers said that the Cell processor it is developing with partners Sony and Toshiba will be suitable for vertical industry applications as well as gaming systems. Formally introduced in February at the International Solid State Circuits conference in San Francisco, the 64-bit Cell processor that will be used first in Sony’s PlayStation 3 game console. However, Mercury Computer Systems has announced it will build Cell-based computers for use in the medical and aerospace industries.
