Michael Spertus is about to get some colleagues. Right now, Spertus is the only employee at Symantec doing fundamental research, which means he is looking at the limits of security technology without a specific product or business goal in mind. This is a new part of Symantec Research Labs, which the Cupertino, Calif., software maker aims to expand. Last week, for the first time, the company showed off its Symantec Research Labs to press and analysts, at two events. Symantec Research Labs is much smaller than the research arms of Hewlett-Packard, IBM, or Sun Microsystems, for instance. But after the merger with storage software maker Veritas Software, Symantec feels its research group has come of age and is worth showing off to the outside world.

A Linux distribution supporting IBM DB2 isn’t usually that big a deal. But when it’s Canonical’s populist Ubuntu distribution, which is known far more for its community support than for its business savvy, it’s more noteworthy. Canonical’s Ubuntu is a Debian Linux branch. In the past, its developers have emphasized its community Linux status. Ubuntu engineers worked directly with IBM DB2 Lab Software engineers to do compatibility testing under the DB2 for Linux Validation program to earn the "Ready for IBM DB2 Software for Linux" service mark.

Record company Sony BMG Music Entertainment has been targeted in a class-action lawsuit in California by consumers claiming their computers have been harmed by anti-piracy software on some Sony BMG CDs. The claim states that Sony BMG failed to disclose the true nature of the digital rights management system it uses on its CDs and thousands of computer users have unknowingly infected their computers, according to court documents. The suit, filed Nov. 1 in Los Angeles Superior Court asks the court to stop Sony BMG from selling additional CDs protected by the anti-piracy software and seeks monetary damages for California consumers who purchased them.

The Bush administration announced it is lobbying for new laws that would bump up criminal penalties for pirates, expand criminal prosecutors’ powers and punish anyone who "attempts" to infringe a copyright. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, speaking at an antipiracy summit hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said the Department of Justice recently submitted to Congress a "legislative package" aimed at toughening up intellectual-property enforcement amid evolving technology. According to the proposal being circulated by the department, the measure would create a new crime called "attempting to infringe a copyright" and subject it to the same penalties as more serious infringement offenses.

A computer security firm said it had discovered the first virus that uses Sony BMG’s controversial CD copy-protection software to hide on PCs and wreak havoc. Under a subject line containing the words "Photo approval," a hacker has mass-mailed the so-called Stinx-E trojan virus, which may tear down a computer’s firewall and give hackers access to a PC, to British email addresses. The malware hides by using Sony BMG software that is also hidden–the software would have been installed on a computer when consumers played Sony’s copy-protected music CDs.
