Advanced Micro Devices will acquire graphics processor maker ATI Technologies in an effort to emerge as a more formidable supplier of chips for business computers. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Friday tapped one of its own lawyers to become its next privacy chief. Hugo Teufel III had been serving as an associate general counsel for the department. Before that, he was an associate solicitor at the Department of the Interior, the deputy solicitor general for the state of Colorado, and an attorney in private practice. Congress created the chief privacy officer position in 2002 with the intent of making it a watchdog over the intersection of new technologies and federal security activities. Teufel will become the third person–and second permanent appointee–to fill those shoes. He replaces acting Chief Privacy Officer Maureen Cooney, who plans in September to start as a senior policy adviser for global privacy strategies at Hunton & Williams, a New York City law firm.

IBM has partnered with an e-commerce services company to sell its continuous data protection software to consumers and smaller businesses. IBM is now selling Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files through Digital River’s oneNetwork channel, which operates e-commerce sites for retailers including Circuit City Stores, PC World and Staples. The IBM software backs up data automatically each time changes are made, allowing users to recover earlier versions of a document in the event of a system failure, virus attack or the theft of a computer. The backup can be created to a USB memory stick, external drive or other remote storage system.

Scammers have set up an exact copy of the download page for Google’s Toolbar plug-in in an attempt to lure users to download a Trojan back door. Reported by security outfit Surfcontrol, some versions of the scam even spoof the correct Google Toolbar Web address for Internet Explorer, using Google’s own redirection service in an attempt to hide the real, non-Google address. The Trojan itself, W32.Ranky.FW, is designed to turn the PC into a bot zombie, and is spread using the conventional technique of asking recipients of a spam email to follow an embedded link.

The customization of off-the-shelf software is the weakest link in application security. This is particularly true for widely used enterprise products such as SAP and Oracle, according to Gartner Research Director Rich Mogull. He said the massive amounts of customization required to get products from both SAP and Oracle to perform ideally means that IT managers have no fail-safe point if some of the code creates vulnerabilities. As a result, managers have to cherrypick through code to find their own mistakes as opposed to downloading a patch from a vendor. Speaking at the Gartner IT Security Summit in Sydney last week, Mogull said this problem has created custom vulnerabilities.
