Sun recoups server market share

Sun Microsystems, which for years has lost ground to rivals, was the only one of the big four server sellers to gain share in the second quarter of 2006, new figures show. The Santa Clara-based company’s server revenue rose 15.5 percent to $1.59 billion in the quarter, according to statistics from research firm IDC. The increase outpaced the overall growth of 0.6 percent to $12.29 billion worldwide, with faster gains in x86 servers, blade servers and lower-end models costing less than $25,000.

Symantec updates prep package

Symantec introduced an updated version of its legal discovery suite on Aug. 21, promising new features that further streamline companies’ abilities to meet information reporting demands spurred by lawsuits and other mandates. Dubbed Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator 6.0, the product is meant to integrate with the data storage and lifecycle management applications sold under the company’s Veritas product line. The package is designed specifically to help companies address the process of retaining, tracking down and turning over electronic documents demanded during the discovery process of litigation.

Cisco buys on-demand video

Cisco Systems disclosed that it acquired IPTV startup Arroyo Video Solutions for $92 million. Cisco’s acquisition of the privately held on-demand video provider is intended to give the company a leg up among cable companies and other carriers looking to deliver video-on-demand beyond TVs to other devices such as PCs and mobile phones.

The new way to make a living

Nearly one-third of American workers say they are putting in longer hours and suffering more stress while at work, according to the findings of a survey released Aug. 21 by Melville, N.Y.-based Adecco, a workforce solutions company. In their Labor Day Snapshot of the American Worker report, Adecco finds that U.S. employees are no longer working 9 to 5. In fact, 29 percent of workers polled claimed they work longer hours than they did this time last year, with 32 percent saying they experience more on-the-job stress.

AOL workers depart over privacy breach

Two AOL employees were fired and its chief technology officer has left the company following a privacy breach in which the Internet search terms of more than 650,000 subscribers were publicly released. The researcher who released the data and that employee’s direct supervisor were fired, said one person familiar with the company’s decisions. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because release of personnel information was not authorized, would not say whether Govern’s departure was voluntary. AOL, a unit of Time Warner Inc., admitted earlier this month that it had made a mistake in releasing three months’ worth of search terms.

Dr.Explain 2.0 authoring tool

INDIGO BYTE SYSTEMS announced the release of Dr.Explain 2.0, the newest version of a help authoring tool for rapid creation of help files and user guides. Using its unique auto capture and annotation technology, developers can document their software interfaces almost hands down. When set to work, Dr.Explain parses a live application and automatically produces screenshots of its windows along with a sequence of callouts for each window control. Users only have to add some description to each callout as needed. Dr.Explain can output the results as a set of HTML pages, CHM help file or RTF document complete with screenshots, cross-references, menus and an index page.

PHP puts mainframe in prime time

As mainframe developers migrate from legacy systems to new languages and environments, PHP should be on the short list, said a longtime mainframe programmer who now helps others to adapt to new technologies. Speaking at the Share conference here on Aug. 16, Wayne Duquaine, director of software development at Grandview Systems, of Sebastopol, Calif., said mainframe programmers ought to consider PHP "because it is coming to the mainframe and it has a short learning curve. PHP is easier to learn than any other Web programming language." PHP also features a short development time, Duquaine said. PHP scripts are five-to-10 times more productive than hand-coding a server application in Java or C from scratch, he said. And PHP also easily integrates database management system processing with HTML and XML processing, he added.
