"The distinction between internal and external comes from the very different day-to-day work required to forge connections among employees, who share technology and an employer, versus what is required to build relationships with customers and prospects," said Patrick O'Brien, Community Manager for the Social Business Council. "Those day-to-day tasks are so different that two distinct disciplines have emerged an internal side oriented around employee collaboration and an external side oriented around marketing and PR."

O'Brien explained that some examples of internal social business professionals would be those in human resources and knowledge management, and some examples of external social business professionals would be social media marketers and public relations experts.

Not only is there a great divide in the social business job responsibilities, but there is a great disparity in terms of salary for these particular occupations. "Twice as many 'internal' social execs earn more than $100K compared to 'external' social execs," said O'Brien. "In addition to that statistic, 70% of internal social business practitioners claimed to earn $100K or more, while only 35% of external social business practitioners earn $100K or more."
