
<p>GE puts its own spin on the concept of "the Internet of Things", the idea that the more physical object that surround us are connected to the internet, the more intelligent the network will become. GE's version, the "Industrial Internet", is a combination of data analytics and interconnection of industrial machines to inform and manage businesses.</p><p>The company has taken a bold step toward that vision this week by taking a 10% stake in Pivotal, an EMC spin-out led by the former VMware CEO and one of the IT industry's most vociferous visionaries Paul Maritz. If US regulators approve, GE will invest US$105m in Pivotal, whose technology it hopes will enable the industrial internet.</p><p>Pivotal's overall charge is to bring the agility of web giants like Google and Facebook, who have mastered the art of rapid delivery of new products and services, to the enterprise. The company currently has a Platform-as-a-Service offering based on VMware's open-source Cloud Foundry project and its own distribution of the open-source data analytics platform Hadoop.</p><p>Toward the end of the year, Pivotal also plans to launch a product that combines PaaS and analytics.
