Wibu-Systems USA is challenging hackers around the globe to take their best shot at cracking their encryption technology. It’s a winner-take-all contest, and the prize is $40,000. It is slated to begin at 6 p.m. EST Jan. 31 and end at 5:59 p.m. EST March 14–or when someone defeats CodeMeter, Wibu’s dongle-based anti-piracy tool, and shows the company how it was done. For his part, John Poulson, Wibu’s vice president of business development, said he wasn’t concerned.

Open-source database company MySQL has decided to stick to the current General Public License rather than move to an upcoming revision, pending broader industry acceptance. MySQL, one of the most successful commercial ventures to use the open-source General Public License, has modified its license terms from "version 2 or later" to "version 2" only, according to Kaj Arno, the company’s vice president of community.

Serious security vulnerabilities in two desktop applications could allow malicious hackers to plant malicious code on millions of computers, according to warnings from the U.S. government’s computer emergency response team. The more serious of the two is a cross-site scripting bug in Adobe’s ever-present Acrobat Plug-In, which fails to properly validate user-supplied data. The issue, which has been patched in Adobe Reader 8 can leverage any Web site that hosts a PDF file to launch code execution or denial-of-service attacks.

Looking to capitalize on its first-to-market quad-core processors, Intel plans to announce its Core 2 Quad for commercial PCs at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, an industry source told eWEEK. The latest quad-core offering will join five other quad-core chips that Intel has already released for servers. Intel has also released the Core 2 Extreme quad-core QX6700 for high-end systems.
