Storm Worm variant

A variant of the Trojan horse attacks known as Storm Worm emerged Monday, targeting people who post blogs and notices to bulletin boards.

Storm Worm emerged in January and raged across the globe in the form of e-mails with attachments that, when opened, loaded malicious software onto victims’ PCs, commandeering the machines so they could be used for further attacks.

The new Storm Worm variant attacks the machines of unsuspecting users when they open an email attachment, click on a malicious e-mail link or visit a malicious site, said Dmitri Alperovitch, principal research scientist at Secure Computing.

Conxsys VantagePoint

VantagePoint is a Domino-based utility aimed at auditing and monitoring Domino server documents for field level changes. Any change to a field in a Domino server document will be recorded and an optional email can be sent to alert the appropriate staff to the change. Administrators will be able to "walk" through the entire history of changes to each field, as well as roll back fields to any previously recorded value with a simple mouse click.

With today’s emphasis on industry and regulatory compliance, tracking and maintaining a list of all field level changes to server documents comes with a high administrative overhead. VantagePoint eases this burden with fully automated real-time and/or scheduled audits.

The password-on-a-stickie

There are good sticky things, and then there are the stickies stuck onto PC monitors with passwords jotted down.

The 17,000 employees at the specialty chemicals company Rohm and Haas–a company whose IT department is a firm believer in off-the-shelf software–until recently were laboring under the task of maintaining between 12 and 15 separate user names and passwords to access systems needed to do their jobs. The help desk, for its part, were handling 14,000 password-related calls per year.

To fix the problem, Rohm and Haas turned to IBM’s Tivoli Access Manager for Enterprise Single Sign-on.
