Nearly nine in 10 IT managers fear the security risks caused by remote working practices, in spite of the increased productivity many home workers insist results from connecting offsite, new research has revealed.
The main concerns stem from the fact that hackers can use remote connections as a "back door" into the company network or to the risk of the corporate network by the use of unauthorized software and Internet access.
The study, conducted by Vanson Bourne and TNS, also showed that 87 percent of remote workers use their home PCs to access company data. The consumer research surveyed 1,335 U.K. adults and the IT manager research questioned 200 businesses of up to 250 employees.

Intel is confirming that it plans on changing some, but not all, of its product names by the beginning of 2008 in order to help streamline and simplify its platform and processor portfolios. At its 2007 Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel executives introduced a myriad of new code names for the company’s future platforms and processors, but the name changes the company is planning for January target those product names that Intel already has in the market.
The name changes were first reported on the Tech ARP Web site in September and an Intel spokesman confirmed to eWEEK on Oct. 3 that the company is moving forward with the name and logo changes.

Symantec has a message for bot herders: Beware. The security vendor is expanding its managed security service to provide protection against bots through its Global Intelligence Network.
By integrating new bot intelligence into its security services, Symantec officials said they can provide additional insight into bot networks and other unauthorized communications with rogue servers. The company’s Global Intelligence Network allows Symantec on an around-the-clock basis to find bot activity from its threat data sources, identify malware and correlate blacklist information with what would otherwise seem to be benign activity.
