GFI Software announced it is tracking a new method through which spammers send messages with MP3 attachments that contain the latest pump-and-dump stock scams. The spam is a short, 30-second MP3 file recorded at low bit-rate with a synthetic female voice promoting a particular stock; the voice heavily distorted to avoid signature-based anti-spam approaches.
Spammers are taking advantage of the fact that the MP3 format is one of the most common in use today and that most anti-spam solutions do not handle attachments very well because they do not actually analyze the attachment content. To address the MP3 spam threat administrators need to deploy as many anti-spam techniques as possible, including Bayesian filtering, while at the same time maintaining a very low level of false positives. Additionally, administrators can block attachments or place restrictions on allowable sizes to weed out unwanted material.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Vormetric has joined with IBM to deliver database encryption across Windows, Linux and Unix platforms through IBM Database Encryption Expert, a stand-alone product that works with DB2 versions 9 and above and protects data in both online and offline storage DB2 accesses. The product will also work with Informix in a future release slated for the first half of 2008, Vormetric officials said. The partnership between the two companies began more than 18 months ago when IBM, of Armonk, N.Y., selected Vormetric technology to be the core encryption component for DB2 on Linux, Unix and Windows.

At the heart of the decline: the slowing pace of contract awards in the U.S. TPI’s numbers show that U.S. companies are also keeping a lid on outsourcing growth, with new scope down 50 percent from last year.
Conversely, Europe and Asia are showing growth in outsourcing deals year over year, with Europe accounting for more than a 50 percent share of global market deals. New scope is up 36 percent in Europe and 72 percent in Asia Pacific, according to TPI. Competitor EquaTerra also found that outsourcing growth was strongest in the Europe/Middle East/Africa geography.
