Worm variants hit news organizations

A number of damaging worms are targeting corporate networks worldwide, with major news outlets CNN, ABC News, the New York Times and the Financial Times in London among the most prominent victims so far. ComputerWeekly.com says variants of the Zotob worm are responsible for the attacks. The worms take advantage of a security hole in Windows 2000.

A look at migration issues

Baldor Electric has consolidated its hardware to an IBM z990 running Linux that hosts its SAP ERP applications. The company, which makes electric motors, moved off IBM pSeries servers running AIX and is planning to switch applications on its Intel servers to applications that run on the mainframe, including moving a Windows-based mail server to Lotus Domino.

Novell doing the hula

Novell’s Hula Project will bring new applications to email, predicted David Patrick, vice president of open source platforms at Novell. News Factor reports that Novell wants the platform to become a formidable competitor to enterprise collaboration applications including Microsoft Exchange, IBM’s Lotus Notes and Novell’s own GroupWise.

Red Hat leaves more questions than answers

Red Hat remains undecided as to whether it will commercialize some other assets it acquired in the Netscape deal, including messaging and collaboration some say could form the basis of an open-source alternative to Microsoft Exchange Server. According to InfoWorld, another question is whether or not it would be easier for Red Hat to expand its partnership with IBM, whose Lotus Workplace is being heavily promoted as an alternative to Exchange.

As part of the announcements, IBM is introducing new browser-based messaging software with support for the Firefox 1.0.X browser, and new software that will integrate Lotus Notes access into IBM Workplace Managed Client.
