IBM builds molecular circuit

IBM researchers have created the first complete integrated circuit built around a single carbon nanotube molecule, a new material that promises significant benefits compared to traditional silicon. The breakthrough is noteworthy not only because the circuit was built using standard semiconductor processes, but also because it used a single molecule as the base for all components in the circuit rather than linking together individual components. Big Blue researchers contend that the new technique can help simplify the semiconductor manufacturing process and provide a foundation to test the material for use in an array of electronics applications, including PC processors.
