
<p>Indonesia is Southeast Asia's most populous nation as well as being the largest economy. Well positioned with its rising middle class as the result of years of good economic performance with bolstered domestic consumer spending and new record high foreign direct investment of Rp206.6 trillion in 2012, there are plentiful business opportunities. Indonesia is now a vibrant, dynamic democracy, transforming from its status as a struggling, developing nation. Given the circumstances, what better market could there be for the seed of social entrepreneurship to take place and bloom than Indonesia?</p><p>Forbes Asia interviewed Mira Kusumarini, the country representative of Ashoka Indonesia, to get an understanding of the current changes taking place in Indonesia's social entrepreneurship landscape.</p><p>FORBES ASIA: Can you tell us about the developments in social entrepreneurship in Indonesia in the era of transition to democratization?</p><p>KUSUMARINI: Social Entrepreneurship has become an emerging field in Indonesia since the past decade especially after the reform in early 2000s. Even though Ashoka has been operating in Indonesia since 1983, the political pressure during the authoritarian government did not allow for the field to grow.
