I watched a video today on the totally excellent CMS Myth Blog in which a CMS pro stated that the secret to a successful content management implementation is empathy.

My interpretation of that is we have to think about the people who are using these systems instead of looking at the problem as a purely technological one. When we want to install a content management system, we don't do it because we want a piece of software to manage our content for us. We want to be able use that tool to complete a task.

We want to get our work done. That's it.

The speaker in this video, who lobbies on behalf of users, is Corey Vilhauer of Blend Interactive. And the empathy Vilhauer is looking for is just considering there are real people trying to do a job who will be using this system, and they don't want to wrestle with the tool every time they try to do a simple task.
