This week, Foxit introduced the latest product in its Foxit PDF Security Suite, the Foxit RMS PDF Protection Tool. The tool was designed for IT pros working in a Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) information rights management shop.

While IRM has never really caught on in a big way, some companies use it to protect documents inside or outside the enterprise. The IRM is a security container and lets an IT pro apply rules to the document, such as an expiration date.

This tool is designed for highly technical IT and development staff, and uses a command line interface so that trained users can enter scripts to apply document rules to batches of PDFs. Foxit argues that PDFs are the dominant digital file sharing tool in enterprises and this tool gives IT pros and developers the means to apply rights across a set of documents, such as who is authorized to open it.

Foxit's VP of marketing, Frank Kettenstock, sees applying these rules as a way to protect documents as they travel in the cloud to mobile devices. "With organizations sharing more and more sensitive information through the cloud, protecting this information to ensure only the correct people access it is critical," he said.
