Coimbatore: They are going where all youngsters are going these days. The free laptops, provided for the technological advancement of students by the government, are now up for grabs on the Internet. All for a meagre Rs 10,000 or Rs 12,000.

Log on to quickr.com where the government laptops are boldly displayed for sale. This apart, shops in Coimbatore also regularly get these 'free' laptops for sale. Voicing their contempt over the "illegal" and public business strategy adopted through online trading, social activists demand that the business be contained immediately.

"We are shocked to see the sales made online publicly for the laptops issued by the government as a freebie. This is meant to benefit the poor and downtrodden to be up-to-date with technology and get maximum benefits from technology; but we are worried about the misuse," said K. Padmaraj, district treasurer of Aam Aadmi Party, speaking to DC here on Monday.

Members of the party have submitted a petition to collector M. Karunagaran highlighting the issue. "It is disheartening to note that the business is going on briskly across the state and publicly, without any fear of punishment," said the party treasurer.
